Please. No More Stupid Commentary

Election day aftermath is fun for the sheer volume of bullshit that you hear spewing from the popular media. My favorite story is the one about Michael Bloomberg’s millions spent for so little return. The best version was the first one I heard, from NPR, where the gloss of all knowing savvy is painted over every nuance.

The story is how Michael Bloomberg spent $100 million, a record for a privately financed campaign, and only got 51 percent of the vote. Should Bloomberg be disappointed? HE WON, YOU MORON!! He got what he paid for.

And, while Bloomberg did spend a helluva lot of money, does anyone think that he did not, at the beginning of the campaign, add up all his negatives and his potential opponents positives, and make some calculation about how much it would cost to win? Its not like it was a big surprise at the end of the campaign to discover he had spent all that money.

So what’s the moral of the story? According to the savvy media, its that Bloomberg spent $100 million and only won by one percentage point. To me it is this. Bloomberg is a rich guy who really likes his work and thinks he can contribute something. So he puts his money where his heart is and goes for it. I like Bloomberg.
